Why save energy?
Business costs:
The Carbon Trust estimates that businesses could quickly cut their heating,
lighting and power bills by 10% or more without any capital investment
whatsoever and that with a little investment it is possible to achieve savings
of around 20%.
Energy costs are continually increasing: companies are being
affected by ever increasing bills and these are starting to impact on the
bottom line.
But saving energy will save you money - switching machines off
after use, or turning the heating down, will make real savings on your
energy bill.
Reducing your bill by 20% could add the same amount to your profits as
a 5% increase in sales
Environmental costs:
There is growing consensus that climate change, also known as
global warming, is becoming the greatest threat to our environment. It is caused
by increasing levels of greenhouse gases which trap the Sun's energy within the
atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide which is produced every time we use
energy generated from fossil fuels - oil, coal and natural gas.
The increase in our planet's temperature has already caused seas to rise,
making floods more frequent and severe. And as the temperature gets hotter,
it's predicted that we'll see more extreme weather: with wetter winters and
drier summers.
Businesses are currently responsible for about half of all the UK's
carbon emissions
Even one small office can emit three to five tonnes of carbon dioxide a
year.
