Network Meetings – Pre-treatment of non-hazardous waste for landfill

ARENA Network holds four sets of Network Meetings per year providing the attendees with the opportunity to listen to experts on a variety of environmental issues that affect every type of organisation. The meetings also provide an opportunity for attendees to network with similar organisations.

We had a huge response to the last set of network meetings to discuss changes to the Landfill Directive. 60 businesses attended one of the four meetings held across Wales.

For the series of meetings held in June, we invited members to discuss the changes to the Landfill Directive that will come into force later this year. From 30th October non-hazardous waste must be treated before it can be landfilled. This will lead to a rise in the cost of waste disposal. Many of the changes are now in place but two more important changes will happen on 30th October 2007. These are:

  • Ban the landfilling of non-hazardous liquid waste and
  • Require non-hazardous waste to be treated before landfilling

Waste treatment is seen as good for the environment, as it encourages the recycling of waste and reduces the impact of the waste sent to landfill. Much of the waste sent to landfill is already treated; however for some wastes more effort is needed. Treatment can simply be separating the waste on site, and recycling one or more of the separated components.

The 30th October may seem a long way off but we feel it is important that businesses have time to prepare for these changes and find improved ways in which to manage their waste, including whether it needs to be produced at all or whether it can be diverted from landfill.

If you are interested in attending the next set of network meetings reserve your place now. Places are limited and are based upon a first come, first serve basis.
