CIWM Waste Awareness Certificate

The Chartered Institution of Wastes ManagementThis new training initiative is intended to make employees "aware of waste". The course is designed by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and supported by DEFRA, DTi, the Environment Agency and WRAP.

By attending this short course, employees will be able to:

  • Understand what is waste
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle waste
  • Know about disposal routes for remaining waste
  • Deal with waste safely
  • Know the legal responsibilities for waste
  • Identify sources of help for those difficult waste questions

  • What is waste
  • The environmental impact of waste
  • The waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse and recycle)
  • Current waste management practices
  • Waste management legislation
  • Duty of Care
  • Health and Safety aspects of waste handling
  • Waste audits

Who is the course aimed at?

Anyone whose work practices produce waste or those people who need a greater understanding of waste principles.

Benefits

The course provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to improve the management of wastes in the workplace.

Each candidate receives a CIWM certificate and a reference book to ensure they keep "thinking about waste" thus saving money and helping to protect the environment by managing waste more effectively.
